'I am emotionally driven in developing uplifting paintings that touch happiness and joy'

I am a Welsh self-taught artist and have been selling my paintings for nearly 8 years. I am full of gratitude to have been able to be living my dream, during this time. I thoroughly enjoy painting and I love giving a sculptured effect to my art, which started when I was a young girl......

How it all began......

As a youngster, I was naturally drawn to the natural beauty of the world around, with a great fondness for nature. I was my happiest hidden in the garden watching birds, pond dipping, picking flowers, bug hunting and identifying trees. When I wasn't able to be sat in nature I would find solace be expressing myself with doodling, painting and drawing. My mum hung my paintings with pride around our home. I also got to explore the British coastline and the Canadian Rocky Mountains with my adventurous parents on extended travels long walks and camping trips. A family friend in his 80's was an artist, and when I was ten, he tutored me to paint only with a pallet knife using oil paints, brushes were not allowed. He also opened my eyes to the detail of wonderful colours around the South Wales coast. He planted corn poppy flowers and welsh yellow poppies in our garden under the orchard trees, which created my passionate love affair with these beautiful flowers. Unfortunately, he passed away before I received an A* for my GCSE art and never got to see how my art progressed, but he always believed one day I'd become an artist.

Unfortunate events sadly cut my happy childhood short and a part of me, when I paint, wants to go back to those happy days. Like the day we moved to a big house with long uncut grass, I remember with such joy and innocence, running through the grass with my sister. You will see many of my painting based on long grasses some of my poppy flower paintings are surrounded by grass protecting them. Like a child’s view, peeking through long grasses, it also encases the poppies like a warm blanket of my childhood memories. Not surprising that the first painting I sold over 10 years ago was of poppy flowers.

Career, family and babies....

When I applied for a foundation course in my teens I was told my portfolio was what you'd see in somebody finishing the two-year course and not starting, and I was too young to skip it and start a degree I felt confused what to do next. However life was beautiful, I fell in love and I was blessed with three girls. During the night when they slept, I painted. I also had a break from the little ones doing local art classes as an artist. It was then when a tutor told me to get my self in the yellow pages as a professional artist. My lack of confidence stopped me pursuing this. When my fourth a boy was born at home like two of my girls and during the throes of labour a midwife asked about my paintings on the wall. While my baby was born I found myself talking about my art and it dawned on me how deeply passionate I was about art that not even labour could stop me talking about my passion for painting. At that point, I knew what I need to do in my life it gave me a determination to awaken my dream of being an artist. With a newborn baby and three little ones visiting local galleries weren’t an option but with the internet, eBay became an excellent place to show my art to the world. I quickly made escalating sales of 60+ paintings a month all over the world. The joy of living my dream as an artist is unprecedented.

Why and how I paint?....

When I paint I feel my heart opens with a love of life. I'm deeply inspired by nature and am passionately driven by developing uplifting paintings that are enriched with a positive and energetic vibe. Every morning I awake excited to be able to paint and can’t ever imagine my life without painting.

When I work freely with a blank canvas; I am reminded that I have an ability to create something from this nothingness. As I paint I render back to a child-like state, giving me a form of escapism from today’s fast-paced world. Inspired by a deep love of nature I begin a piece by sketching the original inspiration onto paper. Then I let myself freely dabble with colours. By the time the artwork is in the initial stages of composition I become quite obsessed with it, even dreaming my new creation. I don’t finish until I feel my painting is talking back to me, shouting out its completeness. I love the whole process of seeing the work emerge from the raw through to its organic state. In its entirety, it fills me with an immense sense of satisfaction and relaxation. I use mixed mediums which enable me to sculpture thick texture onto the canvas allowing me to implement tactility into my paintings.
